Retaining Officers
The New York Times reports that more officers are leaving the army after their initial commitments are completed. They also report that the Army responded with a retention plan and was overwhelmed by the response. In other words, the report is based on fact, and reaches the conclusion that the problem has been solved. Why doesn't the headline say that? The article also seems to indicate the reasons officers are leaving are more along financial lines than anything else.
I'd like to hear what the Officer's Club and other active duty people have to say about this. I rather suspect it's a story along the same lines as "the Army fails to meet enlistment quotas". Which made a brief downturn into a bit of conventional meme still floating around out there.
UPDATE: In a comic twist that simply could not be made up, USA Today has a story up today that the Army is exceeding it's retention rate goals by 15%. Even though they aren't specifically talking about officers like the Times piece, it is still a highly amusing juxtaposition of stories.
UPDATE: The Real Ugly American has a good roundup of various takes on the NYT article.
