Ho Hum

Yet another "Bush at lowest poll number ever" story. We here at the Boulevard have long pointed out that the 'approve/disapprove' wording of these kinds of polls capture both those who don't like the president for what he IS doing as well as those who don't like what he is NOT doing. In other words, people who think he should be more lenient in his stance on illegal aliens and those who think he should be a lot tougher are both going to answer the same way. (Also, we point out that a 1% drop is meaningless since it is well within the margin of error for the poll.)

If Bush wants a surge in the polls, build a fence. That simple. Huge jump in poll numbers, guaranteed.

Great, play off the xenophobia and economic ingnorance of Americans. As if the vast majority don’t have their roots in Europe. I don’t recall the Massasoit Indians telling the Mayflour to turn around. Maybe they should have, right!? Yeah!

Better save some fencing for Liberty Island too; we wouldn’t want any immigrants getting misled by the inscription found there. Oh, and ammend the Patriot Act to make it a capital crime to sell wire cutters to Mexico.

Don’t try that, Jim. In no way at all is it either xenophobic or racist to oppose illegal immigration.

98% of the 12 million+ immigrants who came through Ellis Island were let in, including those who were “without papers.” One gets the sense it was easier to legally immigrate before American started turning xenophobic.

A weak comparison would be prohibition; you can outlaw something, but it doesn’t stop the demand. You make immigration effectively illegal by making it nearly impossible, and people will immigrate illegally.

The great wall of China didn’t work, neither will a great fence.

It will at least be able to slow the flood.

    Gauis, ditto:

The mass migration of millions of Mexicans into the US has great momentum, and is unlikely to be fully controlled. However, a fence will shift the flow toward more legal immigration and away from illegal immigration.

National security on the southern border is the primary concern of ordinary Americans. If our elected representatives fail to secure America’s borders, they don’t deserve office.

If we can’t control the borders, we are in serious trouble.
