Update On My Nephew

A commenter asked whether I knew what branch of the Army my nephew was going into. I did not, but promised to post when I did. I spoke on the phone to the new lieutenant, he informed me he chose to go into the infantry. He will be part of the Second Infantry Division after he completes his well deserved leave.

Congratulations, Eric. You make us all proud.

  1. 2 ID? A fine organization indeed. Does he know if he’s going to one of the brigades at Ft Lewis Washington, or to those esteemed defenders of “Freedom’s Frontier” in Korea? Blackhawk and I would be especially interested if he were going to the latter.

Tell him to have fun at Ft Benning, to enjoy IOBC, and to get his boots broken in for Ranger School. It should be an experience rich with experience and memories.

Fort Lewis is where he reports, but I have no idea how long he’ll be there.

  3. It’ll be just short of a year at Ft Benning and then probably three at Ft Lewis. I’ve heard nothing but good things about being stationed there, so he should probably enjoy himself a great deal. My own experiences at Ft Lewis were brief, and not terribly fun. But the circumstances were somewhat different.

I do feel for him though. He’ll be heading down to Georgia for a summer’s worth of training at IOBC, and will likely be in Ranger School during one of the winter cycles. It won’t be pleasant, but it will certainly build character!

I’m not sure what he’s planning on, career wise. I do know he’s a very sensible young man, and I expect he’ll have a good career whatever road he chooses.
