We here at Blue Crab Boulevard are, if nothing else, persistent. We doggedly follow stories all the way from beginning to end. Although we aren't sure if that's the right term for this particular story. We have another chapterin the tale of Lewis the cat. Lewis is the Connecticut cat that is accused by the neighbors of terrorizing them and attacking an Avon lady. We started following this story 'waaaay back in March when Lewis' problems with the law first hit the news. We then followed up in May when Lewis' owner refused to put Lewis to death at the insistence of one of the neighbors.
Now Lewis has been offered sanctuary by the Best Friends Animal Society of Kanab, Utah. They say they are a "no-kill" animal refuge. The offer is to take Lewis free of charge.
"He would be cared for by specialists who know how to handle cats with behavior problems," Russ Mead, Best Friends' general counsel, wrote to Superior Court Judge Patrick Carroll.
The judge is expected to decide Lewis' fate on Tuesday, when the cat's owner, Ruth Cisero, returns to court. Cisero, who was charge with second-degree reckless endangerment, earlier refused another judge's offer of special probation because it carried the condition that Lewis be put to death.
Cisero's attorney, Eugene Riccio, has described Lewis as "a member of her family."
Things are looking up for Lewis. We do have a mental picture of Lewis swinging from the leg of an Avon lady howling, "Sanctuary!". Maybe we watch too many movies.
