Decline And Fall

A federal Judge has issued a restraining order barring the US Navy from using mid-frequency active sonar during a training excercise. Her decision stated that the plantiffs, environmental groups, "have shown a possibility that RIMPAC 2006 will kill, injure, and disturb many marine species, including marine mammals, in waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands."

U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper was appointed in 1999 by President Clinton.

Aren’t whales just sushi that ddidn;t see it coming?

Lord! When we can’t defend ourselves they’ll blame the Navy for not having the proper technology. We just can’t do anything right.

I don’t think Phillip gets it, though. What is the life of one US sailor worth? Less than a whale?

    “during training exercise”

Now, does that mean “during war”?
    No.
    What does it mean?

    “during training exercise”.

Has the Navy got the proper technology?
    Yes, it does.

Can it use it in self-defense?
    Yes, it can.

    Now, what’s the point?

  • By Gaius, Tuesday, 4 July , 2006 @ 5:09 am

Roland, without proper training how do you expect them to use it during war?

You mean, that with billions of dollars spent on simulators and such, you can’t train in the use of the equipment simulated by those expensive toys you bought to train the troops?

    Would be surprised.

  • By Gaius, Tuesday, 4 July , 2006 @ 5:59 am

Simulators are only good up to a point. All the services have a point at which live-fire is necessary.

    Well, dunno.
    You can be right.

Still, going around and killing off wildlife on each and every exercise.
I won’t go as far as to say the whale’s life is more important than a human’s life - though, there are clearly more humans than whales :) - but then, you could spend a few billion on building an exercise area where there is no wildlife :)

Or just don’t destroy the already much abused area around Hawaii and go play somewhere else? :)
