I haven't commented on the Democrat's efforts to keep Tom DeLay's name on the ballot in Texas. But I was thinking about it when news that a Federal judge had ruled in favor of doing so; what if DeLay simply ran since his name is on the ballot?
SUGAR LAND, Texas (AP) – Former U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay suggested Friday that he may not be ready for retirement just yet, a day after a federal judge ruled that his name must remain on the November ballot even though he resigned from Congress.
DeLay, who came home to Sugar Land for a previously scheduled event, also criticized U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks' ruling that the former House majority leader's name had to remain on the ballot.
"For this guy to say he can't tell where I'm going to be on Election Day, and that I am forced to be on the ballot, well, they may get exactly what they want," DeLay told supporters to raucous applause. Sparks is a Democrat appointed by Republican former President George Bush.
Later, reporters asked Delay if he now planned to run. He didn't say no.
"We have to wait and see what the 5th Circuit does on appeal," he said.
The Texas Republican Party appealed to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans immediately after Sparks' ruling Thursday in Austin. Attorney Jim Bopp said he hoped to have a decision from the higher court this month, allowing the GOP to nominate a new candidate.
I didn't think this was a really good strategy for the Democrats. It may actually prove disastrous.

If Delay decides to actually run, the ads against him will be easy: “He abandoned you, now he’s come crawling back asking for your forgiveness. The relationship is over.”
There’s no way Delay is going back to Congress.
I love it, Delay in ’06. His slogan: They Asked For It, Now They’re Gonna Get It!
It would serve those loony Lefties right. I hope Delay runs and wins big time. Can you imagine the avalanche in business opportunities for the mental health industry in Texas with all the loony Lefties lining up for valium and thorazine? All the breast beating and caterwauling. It would be sweet music indeed.
Why, every shrink in the Lone Star State will vote for Tom, the Invincible. Bring out the Hammer, Tom, and give it to em good. They asked for it, now let’s see if they can take it. How sweet it is. Serve up a big helping of fried crow for the Lefties to choke down, heck, give em a little BBQ sauce to help ease the pain.
I’ll send Tom a check. Any one got the address for his campaign committee? Go Tom! Teach those pesky Moonbats who’s boss.
FormerRighty – Considering how many times “crawling back for forgiveness” actually works, I’m not so sure that would be a bright idea on the part of Delay’s opponents.
The reality is that the man did the right thing. He resigned. He had a reasonable expectation that people would let him go and let the people of the district choose between two new faces. The Democrats are flip-flopping over their position in the Torricelli/Lautenberg affair while Delay was merely expecting to be able to play by the same rules that the Dems had put forward in NJ.
