My own hunch is that within the next few years, the only party loyalists remaining will be so far to the left of center that we'll effectively become a single party nation with the GOP dominating. This will lead to centrist Democrats forming a viable third party, and quite possibly picking up some (very) moderate GOP members. The GOP and this new party will form the new two-party system, with the Dems being relegated to third party status.
