Mark Steyn demonstrates why his columns appear in so many media outlets. In a brilliant column in the Chicago Sun Times, Steyn points out, in one phrase, what the defeatists simply refuse (or are unable) to understand.
Nitwit Democrats think anything that can be passed off as a failure in Iraq will somehow diminish only Bush and the neocons. In reality — a concept with which Democrats seem only dimly acquainted — it would diminish the nation, and all but certainly end the American moment.
Defeatism can still snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. In blindly seeking to damage the president, the damage to the nation is becoming serious, even life-threatening. I think Joe Lieberman sees that, I even think some of the more responsible centrist Democrats see that.
I do not believe the left wing does.

How much is defeatism and how much is realism?

Of course they do. It’s just that they want the U.S. to loose.
Call them what they are: Socialists.
I think the left wing understands it, but that it’s a secondary consideration. They’re incapable of comprehending victory without seeing themselves leading the victory parade.
Institutionalized hate can produce such insanity. Like the overt racism of West Virginia’s Robert Byrd who wrote he would rather see old glory trampled in the dust rather than fight along side a colored man. Today’s hard left Democrats would rather see the US defeated in the Middle East rather than stand shoulder to shoulder with American troops under the leadership of GWB in the fight against terrorism.
Just a speculation:
Any hope of Communist domination was delievered a mortal blow in the late 20th century. Therefore, any individual or group wishing to see it overcome the capitalist west was left without alternatives, until the possibility emerged that radical Islam might accomplish the job that communism failed to do. In the tradition of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”.
Perhaps, the radical left hopes that Islam will destroy western culture and capitalism for them. This would eliminate the problem of the attractions of a free capitalist society. Afterwards, they might believe that they could rise to power by offering the world a secular alternative to brutal repression from a worldwide fundamentalist theocracy.
Could be, Mirra. That is not a rational way to think, but some might be doing that.
