This was all predicted when McCain-Feingold was passed -- not that anyone paid much attention.

I know both John and Kirby personally, and have worked on their respective bids for public office (for Kirby that goes back to 1984, and I still have the T-shirts!). Two good, decent and honest men.

The rubes in my neck of the woods are mostly concerned with low interest rates on new pick-up trucks, good TV reception, and innovative methods for keeping large quanities of beer ice cold.

They also favor discounted prices on quality battery power tools and more drive-thru lanes at the Burger King. Reduced penalties for "failure to appear" are also popular, as is lifting the restrictions for 4th of July fireworks displays.

Control is largely a seasonal issue, it involves proper sight alignment, breathing, and resisting the urge to flinch. Other than that, rubes know they get little or no respect, and have few illusions they have any real control over much of anything. For rubes, control is usually something forced on them by traffic cops and game wardens, which of course they tend to resist.

In America's ideologically hot environment it is a challenge to control what is said and what information is circulated, and control is what the "rubes" want.

[...] Check it out. It is a frightening thought that broadcasters and writers could be considered campaign contributors simply for making an indorsement of a position on an issue. Rather than limiting commercial influence on the free speech process, this places a cost on the right to speak. [...]

Boy, add this to Hamdan and Kelo, throw in political correctness and affirmative action, and you're more than half way to a totalitarian state.

What's next, abolishing religion, socialized medicine, collective farming, and songs about happy tractor drivers?
