I saw the wire service report on this a few days ago, but decided not to post about it. I'm glad I waited. David's Medienkritik has the photos, which makes the story more interesting. It seems a German man was arrested for carrying a fake Smith & Wesson pistol. Which he carried as part of his disguise as an American police officer, complete with a California Highway Patrol car. On the Autobahn.
I mean, how far will these American imperialists go? Taking over Germany's beloved Autobahn?
German traffic police were shocked to see a California Highway Patrol car cruising along the motorway, driven by a man dressed as an authentic American cop, authorities said on Thursday.
But they recovered sufficiently to book the 35-year-old Goettingen resident, whose uniform badge read "T.J. Lazer," for possessing a replica Smith & Wesson revolver without a license and having out-of-date registration plates.
"He was sitting at the wheel with his elbow on the window like in the best TV crime series," said Osthessen police spokesman Martin Schaefer. (…) The man told police he had been taking the 30-year-old vehicle to Bavaria to sell it and wanted to impress the buyer. (Source)
Update: Here is the original report of the German police including some pics. The "cop" carried a toy pump gun with him. His car with was equipped with U.S. police radio – transmitting pre-recorded messages.
The funniest thing is that when I read this the first time, I said asked myself why "TJ Lazer" sounded familiar. David's first commenter gave the answer. It is from the first RoboCop movie. When the main character, Murphy, flashes back to a scene from his home, his son is watchinga show called TJ Lazer on television.
