Crimes involving children are extremely upsetting to me. So the so-called kiddie porn offenders are, to me, very serious criminals who deserve to be hammered with every day of prison time that the law allows. I care not at all what the person charged with the offense did that may have been "good" for the community before the offense. (The quotes are used because very often people who did "good" before being found out, did those "good" things for their own nefarious reasons.)I care not at all what political leanings the person involved had. Drop the hammer.
However, with the right judge and the right prosecutor, you can get away with one of the most heinous crimes imaginable.
ASHEVILLE — A community activist and actor pleaded guilty to 16 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor after using the Internet to collect and share graphic child pornography.
A judge sentenced Andrew Douglas Reed, 53, to a minimum of 10 months and a maximum of 12 months in prison, District Attorney Ron Moore said Thursday.
Reed was arrested on June 10, 2005, during a statewide operation conducted by the State Bureau of Investigation.
According to a warrant authorizing a search of his Dogwood Road home, SBI agents determined Reed used an e-mail account to post 169 images and three movies containing child pornography on file-sharing networks from Jan. 13, 2004, to May 9. Most depicted children as young as 6 engaged in sex acts with adults or other children.
Reed was a regular community guest columnist for the Citizen-Times and involved in multiple community efforts including the Martin Luther King Jr. Association of Asheville-Buncombe County and the League of Women Voters.
Six. Years. Old.
Ten months.
Jay at Stop the ACLU is righteously pissed about this. Let me make this perfectly clear. I do not care what party this guy belonged to, or who he was an activist for. This is sick beyond belief. The judge and the prosecutor should be run out of town. If I lived there, I would be campaigning to recall them both. Right now.

That is absolutely unreal. I’m generally not in favor of electing judges, but I hope they do it there and that guy gets a swift boot.

What is going on with the world today to allow someone to get away with such a light sentence is beyond me.
You were correct by stating that this individual should have been locked away with all the time that is allowable.
You do not know the half of it.
The Judge in this case was appointed by our newly elected Cheif Justice of the Supreme Court of NC Sarah Parker. The Judge, “Robert Lewis” has been retired since 1995! Did you get that? Retired! So he’s not liable for anything! He was called in to do a special favor. The mother of Andrew Reed, a wealthy lady named Helen Reed, she passed away 13 years ago. It always pays to follow th money trail. Look up what political party she may have left a trust for.
Don’t be fooled, money makes the wheels turn and it makespeople loose the ability to do the right thing. It doesn’t matter what side you are on, if you have enough money you can get any favors you want.
So what if a little child lost it’s childhood to evil and to those who helped cover his eveil up. Please help us fight this , help us protect the children and fight corruption.

Needless to say I am not having a good day after reading the article regarding Andrew Reed. This is outrageous and in your face unbelievable. What possible motive is there for these so called civic leaders to praise this man as if he were the second coming? They are on my top ten lists of the most disgraceful people ever. I have not seen one word about the devastating effects that will follow these children for the rest of their lives. Not a peep of what the families are up against. What is wrong with the people in North Carolina that they allow the court system to continue what I call the Monty Hall system of justice? This decision is irresponsible and dangerous. Andrew Reed, this supposed humanitarian is a danger to society, a narcissistic predator that will strike again and who knows what the next level of destruction will be. I have studied the mind of the pedophile for years and the statistics of recidivism are staggering.
What will it take before our communities wake up and see what is happening to our children. They are being hunted, and if you think that statement a bit dramatic… think again, I have devoted my life to this and I know what I am talking about.

Man Who Molested Relative Avoids Jail Time
A Selma man who sexually assaulted a 6-year-old relative in July won’t spend any time in prison for the crime. This week, 26-year-old Jerry Burney received a suspended 13 to 16 month sentence after pleading guilty to taking indecent liberties with a child. Burney assaulted the girl after picking her up from her grandmother’s house. As part of his sentence, Burney must register as a sex offender, and avoid contact with the victim and her family.
All I can say is wake up North Carolina our children’s future is at stake. If our legislators are shocked by this epidemic then they need to open their eyes and act and show us that our children are a priority above all else before one more child and family is devastated.
