Supporting Enemy Propaganda--NYT...

Please notice that the NYT piece and the page that has the email from Wong are BOTH from Tom Zeller. So it cannot be claimed that Zeller wasn't aware of this email, he deliberately left it out of the article in question!!!...

Tom Zeller, writing for the Business section of the Times, questions the AP and its continued insistence on the accuracy and veracity of stories provided to it by one Jamil Hussein but can't help but take unnecessary swipes at the bloggers who raised....

I wish I could say the arrogance of the AP was shocking or at least surprising, but I can't say that, not with a straight face anyway. No, I'm going to have to see some proof, actual proof the atrocity occurred, not some second hand report from unnamed "witnesses" nor I'm afraid will the condescending words of an distant executive suffice. We're beyond all that now. Push has come to shove, the issue is AP's credibility, and the story has very long legs.

It's time for the AP to stop the disinformation campaign, stop the double talk, stop pointing fingers at blogs, the military, Iraqi officials, or anyone else but themselves. It's time to stop making excuses for failing to produce the goods, and actually produce the goods, or admit to publishing lies. That's where we're at, make no mistake about it.

Jules Crittenden at the Boston Herald is to be commended for calling the AP out. Blogs exposed the lack of verification in AP's story and now that a "real journalist" has taken up the issue, it won't be so easy for the AP to duck the hard facts, and continue to float unsubstantiated horror stories.

AP's credibility hangs in the balance.

Actually I find quite some number of media outlets to be beyond the pale... like the WaPo. A steadily lengthening list of those organization that I either consider 'hearsay' or 'rumor sources' requiring *two* independent confirmation of things by differing individuals is growing...

You quote them at your peril and disclaimers are now necessary. Too much 'sole source' reporting and no one wanting to go 'on the record' for anything points to something being hidden. So now I will jolly well sit and wait for news events to get multiple, independent confirmations from indivduals who actually saw them.

You know: reporters.

People who go to places and report on things themselves.

Not take rumor and spread it without actually going out to confirm it.

[...] Blue Crab Boulevard makes a great point — Referring to the AP’s assertion to the Times in a face-to-face interview (that “to engage these questions — to continue to write about them — merely fueled a mad blog rabble that would never be satisfied.”): “Notice how the AP tries to stifle even the Times’ reporting ….?” Message to the rest of the press: Don’t cover this. Patterico — “Apparently it never occurred to either of these stellar journalists that there is, in fact, one thing the AP could do — but, notably, hasn’t. And that is to produce Jamil Hussein.” [...]
