Forward Into The Past
Charles Schumer has flat-out promised that the Democrats fully intend to drag America into a defeat.
WASHINGTON – After Republicans blocked a Senate debate for a second time, Democrats said Saturday they'll drop efforts to pass a non-binding resolution opposing President Bush's troop buildup in Iraq and instead will offer a flurry of anti-war legislation "just like in the days of Vietnam."
The tough talk came a day after the House of Representatives passed its own anti-Iraq resolution and as the GOP used a procedural vote to stop the Senate from taking a position on the 21,500 troop increase.
Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said Democrats would be "relentless."
"There will be resolution after resolution, amendment after amendment . . . just like in the days of Vietnam," Schumer said. "The pressure will mount, the president will find he has no strategy, he will have to change his strategy and the vast majority of our troops will be taken out of harm's way and come home."
Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said: "We're going to move on to other things."
But with Democrats divided over whether to restrict funds for the Iraq war, and with the Senate unlikely to have the votes right now to buck President Bush, the immediate success of the Democrats' plan seems difficult. Reid also declined to say exactly what the strategy might include.
Decision '08 Says this:
The gloves are off, that’s clear…and the mask is falling off, too. The ‘moderate’ Democrats who won the 2006 midterms are nowhere in sight.
This is not what the Democrats were elected to do and this will backfire on them. The question is, how much damage will they do to the United States in the process?

The damage is in remaining; getting out allows us to rethink and move forward with a coherent strategy.

So you’re on the record of approving of the genocide that will follow? Just asking.

The out-of-touch Defeatocrats have absolutely no idea how much the memory of what happened in Vietnam sticks in the craw of most ordinary Americans. We do not want another helicopter on the embassy roof scenario, and the resultant humiliation of America trumpeted around the world, thank you very much. If they want to show their support for our troops, then Let Them Win!

I really can’t get my head around the cut-and-run crowd. Do they really want another Vietnam? Are they so clueless as to the consequences of leaving the middle east in total chaos? We have run one of the “cleanest” wars in the history of the world and the reason we have the problems we do is because of the pussy-footing around.
The left trumpets the statistic that 60-some-odd % of Americans don’t approve of the way the war is run. That may be true, however, a good 20% of those just believe we need to do it harder.

I don’t remember when Congress and the White House and the Pentagon and all of K-Street and Foggy Bottom got moved to the Green Zone… all of those are plenty far enough away to ‘rethink’ things.
Whenever I hear any Congresscritter complain about the ‘lack of supplies’ I do remember who sets the plans, outlays, budgets, and actually ensures that these things get bought: Congress. I have problems complaining about the execution of any War when those in charge of the logistics, supply and outlay of the entire DoD do not do their job. That is Congress.
Complain about lack of supplies? Congress.
Complain about not enough production? Congress.
Complain about beat up equipment? Congress.
That is their job to ensure these things are planned for and addressed and, as we are reminded BY THEM, they will jolly well spend MORE if they think it needs to be done and they have done so for decades… on Pork. Lots of Pork put into the DoD which detracts from their jobs as they must track those projects above and beyond their normal duties of defending the Nation. Yes, Pork has taken precedence over bullets.
Those in Congress complain about the Executive when it is THEIR job to keep things running smoothly and the supplies coming rapidly. Not the Executive’s.
Perhaps we could retreat from Congress and re-think the scenario a bit? Because it certainly is a quagmire in that swampland reclaimed to situate the Capitol.
