[...] John Stossel, who is one of my favorites these days, devotes his column today to that American rite of spring: Tax Day. The traditional April 15th was moved this year, of course, but it is still a time of anxiety and angst. Even those who are all proud of paying taxes and all admit that the system is overly burdensome. (He's never taken us up on our offer to help make him more proud, however.) Stossel explains what is wrong with the current tax code and why it is unlikely to change anytime soon. Twelve years ago, Estonia became the first country to tax everyone — companies and individuals — at the same flat rate. It started at 26 percent, dropped to 22, and will go to 20 in 2009. There are a few deductions for things like mortgage interest, educational expenses, and charitable donations. Very low incomes are exempt. [...]

I guess I must be counted with the unpatriotic. I not only get to pay Federal and State taxes, but around these parts we also pay local taxes, on top of our property taxes, school taxes and sales tax.

I pay, but pay grudgingly.

I guess Arthur Godfrey was an America-hating traitor when he said, "I'm proud to be paying taxes in the United States. The only thing is - I could be just as proud for half the money."

How much would you like to be that this bloke would be more than happy to tell you why and how GWB has messed up the war/government/etc. Why is he so happy to give to a government that can obviously do nothing right? I don't get it.

(Edited - bad html removed - your link broke and was fouling up the entire comment directory).

[...] Blue Crab Boulevard replies to Stoller with, “Ah, yes. Don’t ever question the patriotism of the left, but anyone who questions the tax code is unpatriotic, un-American and against democracy.” On this point Gaius is right. Just as it is wrong for conservatives to call us unpatriotic for opposing the war or for wanting to place checks on the power of government, conservatives are justified in complaining about being called unpatriotic for calling for lower taxes. We can argue that they are irresponsible in allowing for huge deficits and for not showing a responsible plan for what is to be cut, but that does not mean they are not patriotic. [...]
