Stick To Singing

Sheryl Crow should really just stick to what she does best – singing. Because her astoundingly shallow and completely unhygienic advice for saving the planet exposes her to much ridicule. Deservedly so.

She urges people to use detachable "dining sleeves" instead of paper napkins, proposes a reality show in which contestants compete to see who lives the "greenest life" and calls for for a radical shift in bathroom habits:

I propose a limitation be put on how many sqares [sic] of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting.  Now, I don't want to rob any law-abiding American of his or her God-given rights, but I think we are an industrious enough people that we can make it work with only one square per restroom visit,  except, of course, on those pesky occasions where 2 to 3 could be required. When presenting this idea to my younger brother, who's judgement [sic] I trust implicitly, he proposed taking it one step further. I believe his quote was, "how bout just washing the one square out."

Do read the comments over there – Crow is being thumped soundly. This happens over and over again with celebrities. They become famous for acting or singing then somehow think their opinions have additional weight because of who they are. They're famous, don't you know. The opinions aren't usually all that great, many are idiotic.

UPDATE: Via Hot Air, the Smoking Gun managed to get hold of Sheryl Crow's concert rider. She demands parking (close to the venue, but not where the fans can see) for three tractor trailers, four buses and six cars. That is one big tour and one hell of a large carbon footprint. Apparently her demands that others cut their energy usage is a case of do as Sheryl says. She'll wave from the limo.

Has it EVER occurred to you, not to mention all of the other righties exclaiming with outraged shock that Sheryl Crow is telling us all to use just one square of toilet paper, THAT SHE WAS JOKING?

Oh my god. I can’t believe how humorless you people are.

It’s great when you make stuff up.

First off, it’s impossible to take people like Sheryl Crow seriously. But her comments – as ridiculous as they are – illustrate the underlying social and political agenda of global warming, which is really just a ploy for bigger government. Government regulation of the amount of toilet paper a person can use? Such a suggestion is an unprecedented level of government intrusion into our lives, even for a delusional Hollywood celebrity…

You guys seriously need to get out more. Really. I’m worried about you.

Actually,Kathy, I think the whole thing is funny as heck. It makes me laugh when celebrities like Crow make a fool out of themselves. Once again the advice of Laura Ingraham is correct: “Shut up and sing”.

There is nothing on the blog to indicate it was meant as a joke. And the media is carrying it as straight news, not as a joke. If it was a joke it has backfired on Crow – she has essentially eliminated herself as a spokesperson. Because people who read about this in the paper will think she’s gone nuts.

And if it was a joke, it was a very poor one at that. But then I don’t think the “cutting edge humor” of putting Wolf Blitzer in blackface was particularly funny. At all. Maybe you need to look at your own sense of humor if you think this was funny.

  • By Kathy, April 23, 2007 @ 4:06 pm

Sheryl Crow put Wolf Blitzer in blackface? What’s the connection here to the square of toilet paper joke?

I do think Crow’s joke was funny. But I think it’s even more funny that you took it seriously, and are still taking it seriously. The reason there is “nothing on the blog to indicate it was a joke” is because most grown people would be able to figure out that Sheryl Crow’s recommendation that people use only one square of toilet paper, “except, of course, on those pesky occasions when two to three could be required,” could not possibly be anything BUT a joke. How could anyone possibly think she was serious? I mean, you’ve got to be kidding. Maybe YOUR post is a joke, and you’ve played a good game of “gotcha” on ME.

Be sure to read the comments where the “cutting edge humor” is explained.

    Gaius,

First, the link on your 2006 post, to billmon’s blog, did not work when I clicked on it. I got a 404 Error message.

Second, you still have not explained what the Wolf Blitzer in blackface “joke” has to do with Sheryl Crow. Nothing in what was written in your 2006 post explains it, either (of course not, since it was in 2006, not today, right?)

So I remain mystified as to what the blackface issue has to do with Sheryl Crow’s toilet paper joke. I very much suspect that you don’t know either, and would be completely unable to tell me in any logical, coherent fashion, if I were to ask you.

But I’m also convinced that you sincerely think there is a connection — even though you can’t tell me what it is.

I’m not surprised that it has been disappeared. Memory hole and all that. That’s why I pasted the offensive crap on my blog – because I thought it would quietly disappear like the other times it was done on other blogs. The point of that was that the “humor” is exactly as unfunny as what you think is Crow’s joke. By the way, do take a look around all the major media outlets and see if they are reporting Crow’s blog entry as a joke. British papers are carrying it as straight news, as is Yahoo and a lot of other outlets.

If it was a joke, it backfired. Crow is a laughingstock. Because it isn’t funny.

I sort of hoped she was trying to make a joke (remember Al Gore and Iraq?). But, I have not seen ANY reference to her comment as if it was a joke, other than Kathy’s. If she was joking, she should say so (even Al Gore tried to claim he messed up his attempt at a joke).

But, she has done a lot to discredit the eco-nazies, and make them look like fools and hypocrites. And, that is very good thing. Way to go, Crow!

Of course you haven’t. You wouldn’t have seen me refer to it as a joke either, if I hadn’t noticed on Memeorandum that right-wing bloggers were hyperventilating about it as if they thought she was serious.

  • By Kathy, April 23, 2007 @ 9:03 pm

By the way, Terrence, I think you meant “Remember JOHN KERRY and Iraq?” Not Al Gore.

  • By skh.pcola, April 23, 2007 @ 10:15 pm

I guess this means, Kathy, that the Goracle, sKerry, and the Hildabeest are all just cracking funnies when they spout their pablum in one of their collective “suspend your disbelief” moments? I’m glad a progressive chick like you is around to illuminate the intricacies of liberal minds: up is down, black is white, good is evil, like that. Once again, we conservatives are stymied by leftard “nuance.” As Ace would say, layers.

  • By terrence, April 24, 2007 @ 11:32 am

Kathy, you are right: I meant Kerry. But, I do not see much real differnce between them – from their public statements, both live in fanasty worlds.

  • By terrence, April 24, 2007 @ 1:14 pm

It seems Ms Crow is now claiming the remark was a joke, after all. However, I think we should pooh-pooh this attempt to wipe clean the record.
