Six Arrested In Plot To Attack Fort Dix

Six people, all from the former Yugoslavia, have been arrested for plotting to attack Fort Dix, the US Army base in New Jersey. The plot was reportedly broken up in the planning stage after the suspects attempted to buy automatic weapons from an arms dealer who was working with the Feds.

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. - Six nationals of the former Yugoslavia were arrested on charges they plotted to attack the Fort Dix Army base and "kill as many soldiers as possible," federal authorities said Tuesday.

The six were scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Camden later Tuesday to face charges of conspiracy to kill U.S. servicemen, said Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in New Jersey.

Five of them lived in Cherry Hill, about 10 miles east of Philadelphia and 20 miles southwest of Fort Dix, he said.

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because documents in the case remain sealed, said the attack was stopped in the planning stages.

The men were arrested while trying to buy automatic weapons in a sale set-up by law enforcement authorities, the official said. Authorities believe the men trained for the attack in the Poconos and allegedly conducted surveillance at other area military institutions, including the Army's Fort Monmouth, the official said.

Apparently, the six are not too terribly bright since attacking a large military facility like Fort Dix would not end well for them. But I'd still rather see things like this broken up before they actually try to pull off an attack.

I guess I’m going to have to expend the effort to go read the entire article so I can discover whether or not these folks fall into the “indeterminate ethnicity” trap of modern journalism. In other words, I’m wondering if these doods are Moose-limbs.

    More likely Presbyterians.

You need to understand that people are not armed on military bases. It would be a great place to attack, if you are a jihadi. Remember the marine barracks in lebanon?

Have you tried to get onto an Army base since 9/11? I have. Trust me, there are plenty of armed guards and I’d be willing to guess there is a ready response force as well. And the Marine barracks in Lebanon was a bomb attack. (I can attest that it would be very difficult to pull that same thing off today at a stateside base. The entrances have been made a lot more difficult to rush at the bases I have been to. LOTS of Jersey barricades.)

As a side note. During training at Ft. Dix in the late 70’s and early 80’s there were people who would sneak onto base and try to steal weapons from troops as they trained in the areas on the east side of the base. That would be the est side of the impact area. We were not allowed, at first, to carry live rounds. After someone _did_ make off with a trainee’s M-16 trainers (officers adn senior NCO’s) were allowed to carry three rounds for their .45 or three rounds for an M-16. Supposedly people carried more. ;)

Obviously they were “utes” who were mis-identified. Could have been anyone, really. Might want to check for posi-traction.
