New Simulation Of WTC Collapse
I'm quite sure that this will make no difference to the "truthers" and their particular insanity, but Purdue University has just released a new computer simulation of the effect of a jetliner plowing into the World Trade Center. They concentrated on the effect the impact had on the fireproofing of the structural steel in the buildings.
The two-year Purdue University study, funded in part by the National Science Foundation, was the first to use 3-D animation to provide visual context to the attacks, said Christoph Hoffmann, a professor of computer science and one of the lead researchers on the project.
"One thing it does point out… is the absolute essential nature of fireproofing steel structures," Hoffmann told The Associated Press. "This is something that wasn't done originally in the World Trade Center when it was built. It wasn't code at that time."
Mete Sozen, a professor of structural engineering and a lead investigator on the simulation, said Purdue researchers hope their work leads to better structural design and building codes to prevent similar collapses.
"In the unfortunate development that we shall have to design structures to survive such events, the methods we have developed and will be developing will be of great use to designers," Sozen said.
The animation, intended in part to help engineers design safer buildings, begins with a map of lower Manhattan as it appeared on Sept. 11, 2001. The video then shows a plane slicing through several stories of the World Trade Center's north tower and follows the disintegrating plane through the interior and out the opposite side.
The report concludes that the weight of the aircraft's fuel, when ignited, produced "a flash flood of flaming liquid" that knocked out a number of structural columns within the building and removed the fireproofing insulation from other support structures, Hoffmann said.
Without fireproofing, it does not take long for structural steel to lose as much as 80% of its initial strength. Nothing is designed to take that kind of loss of strength and survive. As I said, though, it won't phase the truthers one whit. They disconnected from reality quite some time ago. For the sane, here's the simulation. It is disturbing to watch. Keep in mind that this is based on the actual physics involved and the mathematical calculations. That factual basis is then coupled with a state-of-the-art computer animation program to yield the video.

This is a great video. I saw it for the first time while watching a program on the Discovery Channel about the science behind combating terrorism. It sent chills up my spine. And, like you, my fist thought was that while this should be proof positive for Charlie Sheen, Rosie and their ilk, they will shrug this off as another piece of the “Government Coverup”.

That fireproofing was a coating on the columns after the building was constructed? First I’d heard of that.
The thing I take away from this video is that at least one titanium engine shaft looked like it tumbled thru the structure like a dum dum bullet taking out anything in it’s path.
There’s definately a cover up but my guess it has a lot more to do with the fact that the building obviously was not built to withstand a direct hit by
a jetliner like the architects said it would and the utter incompetence of the Bush administration in failing to recognize the threat beforehand despite hundreds of warnings from at least 14 different allies.
On 9/11 Condi Rice was scheduled to make a major speech lambasting Dems for shifting $900 million from
Bush’s precious nat’l missile defense shield to anti-terrorism activities in the Defense bill a few days before. Needless to say that speech was never given and is now classified. Not because of any security considerations mind you - it was to be a public speech afterall - but because it’s embarrassing as hell and really points out just how unseriously they take national security. Why swat flies when you can give your buddies hundred billion dollar contracts to build weapon system boondoggles?

And the building was designed for a 707 strike. Ever compare the relative sizes - and fuel capacities - of the airplanes? The 767 is a lot bigger and has about double the range of the 707, so its fuel capacity is also a lot higher. And both planes were very nearly full of fuel.

You’d have thought that the Truck Crash in San Francisco that melted the elevated steel transition road would have been proof enough, I mean it was caught on video.
Also, I thought ALL steel frame structures were fireproofed after being erected. It’s a little tough spraying it on before you erect it!

Having done a very little bit of fireproofing work at one time, an acceptable fire barrier can be drywall, depending on the application (believe it or not). I believe the WTC was built before spray-on fireproofing became the norm.

I like how you gloss over the impotent years of the Clinton administration. Oops, did I use impotent with Clinton? Who would of “thunk”? How about the Liberals “political and suicidal insistance of no racial profiling”. Several of the 9/11 “jihadis” were stopped by local police and let go because we don’t want to show how we discriminate against “undocumented workers”.
There was also a flight that James Woods the actor was on. He noticed several “middle eastern” men acting funny. He zeroed in on a particular one. Their actions disturbed him so much he warned the flight crew and pilot. He was positive this man was up to no good and might hi-jack the plane. After the plane landed the FBI interviewed Mr. Woods. And said they would get back to him. Then 9/11 happened and they finally took his story seriously. You see that man was Mohammed Atta on a “dry run”, but people in the FBI didn’t want to be accused of being racists. Thank you, Liberals. I don’t give a damn that you think Bush or Rice wanted to enrich their buddies instead of protect the country. A good dose of “common sense” would have stopped 9/11. Something that that dumcrats and liberals lack.
