Progressing To What?

The left in America no longer wants to use the label 'liberal' to describe itself. They much prefer to be called 'progressives' these days. Apparently they think that word has had enough rest that people will forget that it used to mean 'Stalinist'. (Incidentally, searching 'progressive' + 'soviet' on Google yields a bumper crop of references to the term in all its former glory. But we digress.) Ed Morrisey has uncovered the latest in progressive progress. That would be progress toward the fraudulent racial smearing of candidates.

It doesn't take long for provocateurs to crawl out of the woodwork to attack candidates, especially in stealth attacks. With Fred Thompson, they've apparently started before he officially enters the race — and in one case, race is the operative word. Apparently hoping to confuse web surfers looking for Fred's website at [removed], a new site has appeared at [removed] — only this site welcomes people to the Ku Klux Klan, "Bringing a Message of Hope and Deliverance to White Christian America!" It includes links to a variety of disgusting racist sites.

Who would post something like this as a smear on Fred Thompson? Someone a little too stupid to cover his tracks, possibly? A DNS search gives us an answer. The domain name, registered through GoDaddy (no great shock there), belongs to:

I pulled the urls for the two websites, you can get them over at Ed's place. And you can go over to GoDaddy and pull the whois for yourself. (The registration is on the restricted list which means it is very new and cannot be transferred just yet.) The good captain also uncovers campaign contributions from a man with the same name and occupation (lawyer of all things) to various 'progressive' groups. Ed is waiting for a return call from Reynolds. We'll see if he actually gets one.

Gaius, You understand where the term right wing (as in right and left) comes from don’t you?

Prior to the French Revolution, when presenting to the monrachy, nobility was consigned to the right hand side of the monarch, peasents to the left. The term “right wing” was used during and after the revolution to denote who was part of the nobility (the oppressors) and who was part of the people.

The game you play is silly, because one can find all kinds of meanings for words. Do a Google for “right wing” + Soviets and you find all kinds of articles that support the reestablishment of a Marxist state in Russia.

Definitions as you define them are simply not that easy.

Bzzzz. Incorrect. It comes from the seating arrangements in the French National Assembly of 1789 where the “first estate” or nobles were seated on the right of the chamber.

Many legislative chambers put the conservatives on the right, as a matter of fact.

There are other meanings of words we could have fun with, too. Including the French droit, or right being a synonym for not just correctness but for justice.

I always favored running dog imperialist lackey, but that’s just me.

(Not to mention a Google on “Greenwald + Townhouse”– Why would a “self-described” ‘libertarian’ ever be actively participating in co-ordinating the dissemination of ‘left-wing’ “talking points”?)

Uh… Gaius? The usage of the terms in the newly developed French National Assembly at that time was a direct transference of the popular usage that came PRIOR, so that it was understood.

You do understand that history sometimes has a precedent, don’t you?

Just to be clear here: it is a matter of historical fact that the terms “left” and “right” are derived from the practice in the French monarchy of having nobility bow to the right, and peasant bow to the left. The practice was also to have nobility line up on the right, peasants on the left. This was transfered to the Assembly for common reasons after the Revolution. And, the usage of terms became popular applications around the world.

This is historical fact, taught to grade schoolers.

Actually, I’ve figured it out. This is all a plot by Romney: he hires this lawyer as a cutout and has him make small donations years ahead of time to moonbat causes in order to look legit, knowing he would one day face a challenge for the conservative mantle from … The Fred. Said cutout then links to John “Breck Poster-Boy” Edwards’ site after first distracting us with White Supremacist links and goat porn (No al-Qaeda jokes, I promise), in order to generate enough sympathy for Edwards that he wins the nomination, only to be crushed by Romney, who seized the Republican nomination after the scandal linking Fred to a racist white goat porn star.
