[...] Will's right that the two sides will, inevitably, disagree over the report - no matter what it says. That polarization was firmly in place long before the war became the focal point. The danger here, though, is more for the Democrats. As was mentioned yesterday, there has been a scramble by a lot of Democrats to back away from the Reid-Pelosi winner-take-all strategy of continuous attacks. The only way that would be happening is if some Democrats are seing polling numbers that they do not like - at all. [...]

[...] Gaius at Blue Crab Boulevard quips: One thing that is incredibly ironic about the whole situation is the sudden shift toward criticizing Iraqi politicians for doing nothing. Given the fact that our Congress under Democratic leadership is pretty well doing nothing, I don’t think that is a really great tactic for the Democrats. [...]

Where is this progress of which you speak? (Except in Anbar, which has very little to do with the Glorious Surge and more to do with the fact that Iraqis don't like Al Qaeda -- which would be important except that AQ is a minor factor in Iraq overall.) But what's hilarious is that you really believe that "the surge is working" when in fact there is no proof of this and none is offered in that article.

The fact that Democrats are petrified of being seen as "weak" is nothing new. But the fact remains that there has been no tangible progress in Iraq (Iraq is far more violent now than it was at this same time last year), that we cannot win militarily, and that Bush, Petraeus and the Republicans are committed to America's defeat and humiliation (keeping us in Iraq forever is a defeat).

So some Democrats may join with the Republicans in demanding that America stay in Iraq and be defeated. Hopefully not enough to create an anti-American, pro-war majority, but probably enough to keep the war going and make Bush's dream -- an American defeat and an Iraq bloodbath (the longer we stay, the worse the bloodbath will be when we finally leave) -- a reality.

Classic case of Do as I say - Not as I do!
Sorry, but the democrats are never going to get it until we root out the old guard who are mired in their own political agenda in their quest for power and money! Some of the blue dogs have demostrated at least a willingness to go with their conscience rather than tow the party line. There may be hope! And, if the republicans suddenly grow a spine and stand up for what's right for America and not their political careers - we may have a chance!
