Thompson Declares
No big surprise, Fred Thompson has entered the race for the Republican nomination. Let the sniping begin for real now.
On the show this evening, Mr. Leno joked, in reference to Mr. Thompson’s long “testing the waters” of a candidacy phase: “You’ve been in the water for a while now; are you starting to get a bit wrinkly?”
Mr. Thompson, 65, said his wrinkles did not come from water, and added: “We’re where we need to be right now and that’s one of the things I need to talk to you about. I’m running for president of the United States.”
After some applause, he continued: “We started around the kitchen table in late March, talking about it, thinking about it, thinking about what kind of world and what kind of country our kids would grow up in,” he said. “I decided it was time for me to step up, for them.”
In skipping the debate and a more formal announcement at a news conference or on a news program, Mr. Thompson provided himself a pleasant, risk-free forum, safe from potential negativity and tough questioning from reporters, a debate moderator or the public.
The NYT will be hard on Thompson, of course. AllahPundit has video.

I don’t have a lot of time for Fred. I think he ducked the debate just like the dems did – He wouldn’t have made a good showing. Fox did a great job – hard questions and the panel was up on all the issues. It would have been interesting to see how Fred would have answered, but then again… He’s a loser!
