[...] Gee, I wasn't the only one who saw the distinct resemblance in MoveOn's vicious smear attack on General David Petraeus and the downfall of Senator Joseph McCarthy. The Boston Globe runs an op-ed today from Peter Feaver using the title "MoveOn's McCarthy Moment." Hugh Hewitt mentioned it yesterday in the LA Times, Dean Barnett saw the resemblance - but also points to a wider problem. Feaver hits MoveOn pretty hard today: The MoveOn.org ad is vicious, and would garner comment even if it were merely one more primal scream in the coarse blogosphere debate over Iraq. But it is not an angry e-mail or blog entry. It is a deliberate attack on the senior Army commander, in a major daily newspaper, with the intention of destroying as much of his credibility as possible so that his military advice could be more easily rejected by antiwar members of Congress. [...]

[...] Perhaps the best comment on it though comes from Blue Crab Boulevard. Those were some of the words that are generally credited with beginning the downfall of Senator Joseph McCarthy. The rest of the exchange between McCarthy and Joseph Welch, acting special counsel for the US Army, are probably even more widely remembered: “Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator…. You’ve done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?” [...]

[...] Meanwhile, the Right Blogosphere is still hyperventilating over the Moveon.org ad. Howard Fineman is on Countdown right now saying that the GOP is whipping up outrage over the ad as a way to go on offense against Democrats. They can’t go on offense against the Dems on the war, you see, so they have to grab whatever phony issue they can. All day long rightie bloggers have dutifully jacked up the pitiful victimized whining act, sometimes to genuinely hallucinatory degrees. [...]

Each Democratic candidate for POTUS will now be asked to explain what they think about such a ridiculous projection on the part of the Soros-cide victims. This should be a dead albatross hanging around the already treason-prone Democratic Party [Remember Teddy & Jimmy's overtures to the Kremlin in '83 to stop Reagan's re-election.

[...] Gaius at Blue Crab Boulevard finds this to be MoveOn.org’s McCarthy moment: I think they crossed a line this time, but ultimately the public will decide that. At the very least, they have made life very hard for the Democrats by handing the Republicans a gigantic club to beat their candidates with. Any district where MoveOn runs an ad will become a battleground with the Democrat scurrying to get distance from MoveOn. [...]
