Well? What Do You Think?

UPDATE: Ok, now comments appear to be working and the new theme looks like it is steady. Please let me know what you think.

I'd also appreciate any blogger testing the trackback function if you would be so kind.

I'd appreciate some feedback on the new look.

ATTENTION: Comments are hosed - if you try to post one you will go to Google - Working on it.   Fixed

The header looks good. Crop looks real good, possible rain tonight.

  • By Laurence F. Sheldon, Jr., Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 1:29 pm

    This is Google?

how do I do the colors for the captcha?

The rest of the question: As long as the format doesn’t get in the way of the content, what ever floats your boat. Add jigglies and seizure inducing flashy stuff or loud (any) noise–I’m gone.

  • By Gaius, Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 1:41 pm

    Nah, no flashy stuff.

  • By Maggie, Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 1:48 pm

    Gaius -

Looks nice … But some of the text seems a bit light in tone … A little strain, for me at least, in reading it.

  • By feeblemind, Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 1:50 pm

The site has had a different look the last 4 times I have been here. I think I preferred it the way it was, but that opinion is coming from a guy that hasn’t changed clothing styles or hair styles in decades. Bottom line: Content is more important than looks.

  • By Gaius, Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 1:57 pm

    text color better?

  • By Gaius, Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 1:59 pm

    feeblemind,

You mean you don’t come here for the flashy layout?

Actually, the old template didn’t work with all of the software updates - I needed to upgrade to a more recent one that conforms better.

  • By Sam L., Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 2:33 pm

I like this new format, especially the calendar date by each post.

Is that the Golden Gate Bridge, as seen from the Southwest? If so, why? If not, what bridge is it? (Inquiring minds want to know.)

  • By Gaius, Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 2:50 pm

Beats me. It came with the template.

  • By feeblemind, Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 3:29 pm

Gaius, I understand the reason for change and have no problem with it. But that wasn’t the question, you asked how I LIKED it. Not to worry, I am not sitting here seething, with steam shooting out my ears. The world changes. Progress is usually for the better. As for coming for the flashy layout, my feeblemind will have to ruminate on that for a while to see if I can come up with a reply that is equal to the question.

  • By Gaius, Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 3:30 pm

    Heh.

  • By terrence, Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 3:59 pm

I liked the old format; but this fine, too (I have Windows 2000 Pro on my PC).

If it is less trouble to keep the new version running, stay with it.

The way you manage the captcha sucks (I don’t see it until after I hit “Submit Comment” and you discard my comment before telling me I am an idiot).

That picture is from Baker Beach isn’t it–popular in years gone by with the nudists.
Never could get that interested in blue hippies, but ….

That view of the bridge shows something that I think gets less ink than it deserves–the arch (hard to see–the concrete piers that hold it up are more visible) under the near end of the bridge.

The purpose of the arch? to carry the bridge over the old fort on Fort Point which would have been torn down in more modern times because it is in the way of the bridge.

That fort is worth a day of your time, lots more than the ritualistic walk across the bridge. (I have slept in that old fort — they have (had) an outstanding program that has school kids in over-night re-enactments.)

I don’t understand the bit about “captcha”, Laurence. And I haven’t discarded any comments today except a one from a driveby who violated the policy in his first sentence.

Except for a text color change, this is an off the shelf template - I didn’t and couldn’t program any of it.

Looks good. But the topics and content of this site has always been top quality, so please don’t change that.

  • By Laurence F. Sheldon, Jr., Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 5:08 pm

Most of the blogs that I comment upon, that use captcha have it show up after “Submit” and I am apparently not bright enough to notice it on thhe way by.

So I hit “submit” and get slapped. And the priceless prose is gone.

You don’t explicitly delete it–the “stupid commenter” lopgic doesn’t preserve it. So I can’t just fill in the captcha and go on.

    I’ll live.

  • By Gaius, Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 5:25 pm

Oh, now I get it. I’ll see if there is another way to do that. But I had to turn it on when another massive spam wave hit.

  • By Marcus Atrocious, Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 8:50 pm

    Me likey.

Now get back to posting about the Animal Uprising!

    Marcus

  • By Quilly Mammoth, Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 9:13 pm

I tried to track you back. It’s not showing. I’ll try specifically requsting that it track you back.

  • By Gaius, Wednesday, 17 October , 2007 @ 9:57 pm

Marcus, you’re a slave driver. Posted a new one just now.

    text color better?

    ——————————-

Yes, a bit better. Thanks! Up a couple shades.

As with any site revamping it takes a few hits to get used to it.

  • By feeblemind, Thursday, 18 October , 2007 @ 10:49 am

Is there any way you can reformat the page so that we don’t have to scroll left and right to see it?

  • By Gaius, Thursday, 18 October , 2007 @ 11:06 am

That’s a function of the resolution you have your screen set at. My browser stats says that less than 10% of all users have a low screen resolution. What is yours set at?

  • By feeblemind, Thursday, 18 October , 2007 @ 11:48 am

I am at 640 x 480. If I go to 1024 x 768 I don’t have to scroll but then the print’s enough smaller that I better have my glasses on. I only asked because I made the same suggestion to my cousin when he was building a site for his PC security business. He told me that other people had made the same comment so he changed it as it was no big deal. He also said he was working from a different screen and he hadn’t realized that people had to scroll back and forth to view everything. But don’t change it just for me if 90% are happy the way it is. I can easily live with it.

  • By Gaius, Thursday, 18 October , 2007 @ 11:52 am

You could also change the screen resolution and increase the font size. The template is 900 pixels wide, so it actually isn’t much bigger than the previous one.

  • By feeblemind, Thursday, 18 October , 2007 @ 3:13 pm

Yes. I could try that. Coincidentally, Coming Anarchy just changed their blog format as well. Hmmm….. Must be a trend.

  • By sam, Thursday, 18 October , 2007 @ 3:51 pm

I like your new look. The old blue took a while for Firefox to load and was kind of hard on my eyes.
