Rightosphere Temperature Check

John Hawkins at Right Wing News has another of his periodic right-blogosphere temperature checks up today. Most of the results are pretty lopsided, but there are a few that might surprise you.

The two that stand out as positions that people would think a “rightie” shouldn’t have are the War on Drugs and the balanced budget.

I oppose the war on drugs; I’m personally shocked that those who rail against eavesdropping on foreign calls aren’t in arms about the secret drug courts in the United States. It’s like prohibition only the effects are far more reaching than many know. One of the biggest reasons that Mexico is so screwed up is the drug trade’s affect on the overall honesty of it’s public servants. Public Officials in Mexico are corrupt from top to bottom. This is one reason that Mexico is, for all intents and purposes, a Third World Nation…and why her citizens flee to the US.

Drugs and Drug related violence not only spawned Hip Hop, and it’s misogyny and effect on the family, but is one of the major contributing factor to the appalling murder rate among young Black men.

I think if we sell crack cocaine at a deeply discounted price much of the problem will be self correcting…and we can find something for the under-employed Iraqi grave diggers to do.

I was surprised by the results of the drug question as well. QM makes good points. I am not ready to see illegal drugs made legal nationally, but I would, with trepidation, like to see a Left Coast state legalize them on an experimental basis. One wonders what the tradeoff would be in increased social costs, but the fact is we just don’t know.
