People tend not to wipe off the screen leaving a wonderful, oily, whorl-perfect prit for the next person to come along. A rubber glove full of warm water will do the trick 9 times out of ten. Think the lads at Mythbusters did one of their crime specials with this element. If I recall correctly, they were pretty disgusted at the ease with which these could be bypassed. I think they just xeroxed Grant's print or some such.

Pretty sad, really.

One of the security gurus at a compnay I used to work for said you can get fingerprint readers that also look for a pulse and/or temperature, so they can tell if the finger is attached to a living body. (It was relatively big insurance company, and the security folks had to be good at what they did.) These ones are probably very expensive.

I asked her about this after I heard about a guy in Hong Kong or Singapore who lost a finger and his very high end vehicle; she also said that is this why the fingerprint only readers are falling out of use. I guess the Brits are a bit behind tecnhnogy's bleeding edge (as it were).
