I agree with NortonPete it was probably someone playing a joke. After all, my ship is protected by an invisibility cloak - they couldn't have seen it! ;-)

How safety conscience these aliens are in observing our rules for position lights on aircraft. Green on the right wing, red on the left with a white light at the tail and a red flashing beacon.
About 20 years ago a group of local pilots north of me got into some hot water with the FAA and police for a UFO hoax that went on for years. About 10+ of them would takeoff with various small aircraft and form a formation at night, particularly when there was good visibility but no stars or moon.
They would fly at an altitude that made them look like one giant UFO mother ship. Sometimes idling back their engines to appear to hover, they then might all turn the lights off on a signal and break out of the circle in every direction putting their lights back on. This would be done over a small town, with Piper Cubs or Cessna 152s.
Local police would get loads of UFO calls. They got smart and landed at different small local airports. Stories would pop up in the local paper, some with very elaborate descriptions of alien craft.
They did get caught, I think they flew over a prison ( FAA infraction along with formation flying ) and the guards turned the lights on them, called the police who waited at some of the airports.
Anything for a joke.
