California Storm Update
The family that was missing in California has been located and rescued.
After looking for a missing Clovis family all afternoon, search teams found 64-year-old John Hopper and his 15-year-old twins, Matt and Sarah, safe in a popular hiking destination in the Sierra National Forest.
Crews found the family with three other people who had apparently gotten trapped in the woods after the storm hit, said Madera County Sheriff's spokeswoman Erica Stuart. All six hikers were in good condition.
This is the same article I linked last night, but in the Washington Post. They also have a slideshow of the storm.

By 2012 the Sun’s current higher activity should begin to receede. The new Ice Age is here. But now we know how to warm the planet up…we’ll rip all the mufflers off our cars and belch out greehouse gases like there is no tommorrow. Otherwise the high level of cold might kill some sort of snail darter and the world will end.

This is great news. On the othe hand the most dangerous animal in the wild is man. This awlful story is on cnn:
—Gary Michael Hilton has been charged with kidnapping with intent to cause bodily injury in the case of missing hiker Meredith Emerson, a spokesman for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Saturday. The search for the 24-year-old woman is no longer considered a rescue mission, authorities said.—
My wife and I hiked many popular areas and I was always on the look out for odd people, not animals. We left a trail at Jackson Hole when I saw a person hiding behind a tree 50 yards ahead. We made it back to the car but this individual appeared about 1 minute behind us.
Beware.

That has happened many times. Predators go where the prey is. One of these would be a smrat thing to carry - it would stop more than just bears.
