Maybe I goofed. Something that must be added to the logic of this equation, northern sea ice, is only 1-3 meters thick. We are talking about the same polar ice that the Nautilus submarine surfaced through in the 60's. One would expect ice that thin to change greatly with minor current and sunlight variations. During August, the North Pole can reach 60+ degrees Fahrenheit and 23 hours of daylight. A few sunny days can have enormous impact, as would a long cloudy stretch in August.
