It’s The Courts

I have been saying for a very long time that this election is about the courts. Conservatives and anyone that is right-of-center should be paying attention to this. According to Human Events (an outlet I seldom link to) John McCain would appoint Fred Thompson to help vet judicial appointments.

In a McCain administration, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson would play a dominant role in selecting Supreme Court nominees and other judicial appointments, sources close to the McCain campaign and to Thompson tell us.

That would be a very smart thing to do. Fred Thompson would be a powerful, credible public voice for John McCain in that arena. Thompson doesn't just play a lawyer on television, after all.

Even though I dislike some of McCain's positions, I dislike them considerably less than I dislike the thought of a left-wing packed Supreme Court and Federal Judiciary. Keep that in mind folks.

Even though I dislike some of McCain’s positions, I dislike them considerably less than I dislike the thought of a left-wing packed Supreme Court and Federal Judiciary.Maybe I’m just too old and cynical to be much of an ideologue — or trust them, for that matter, no matter whether they’re liberal or conservative — but in the several decades I’ve been voting, I can’t think of a single Presidential candidate that satisfied me completely, and that includes Reagan. In the 2000 primary I voted for McCain, not so much because I liked him better than Bush, but because the minute Bush said "compassionate conservatism," I thought, "Yep, we know all about that, and no thanks." Apparently, however, conservatives have short memories, since everybody has been all up in arms about numerous issues, all of which were predictable, if they had listened to Bush when he was campaigning.I voted for Bush in the general, and happily voted for him in 04, just because I was so glad Al Gore wasn’t in the White House on 9/11.

I agree, rightwingprof, and have said much the same thing several times here at the crabitat and many times elsewhere. No candidate has ever been perfect and McCain was not my first choice then or now. However, I beleive that the Obamessiah is the absolute worst possible choice for America in the present world climate. Those of us who love this country, love our freedom, respect our national identity and care about the safety and welfare of our people must get together and elect John McCain. President Barack Obama would be the downfall of our nation and everything we hold dear. In my humble opinion, he could do more damage in four years than Jimmy Carter ever even conceived of in his deepest fantasies.

As my favorite author, Robert Heinlein, once said, "Always vote. There may not be anyone you want to vote for but there is sure to be someone you want to vote againsr."

As a law student, you hit the nail on the head about what I care about.  Stevens has been holding out for a Democrat to replace him.  If McCain wins I think Stevens throws in the towel on holding out and the Court will be 6-3 conservative.  Although I myself don’t affiliate conservative/liberal/republican/democrat - I do like the future a whole lot more if McCain is doing the appointing to the federal judiciary.

In a lot of things, McC is a typical Beltway liberal, indistinguishable except for slight shifts in stress from Obama.  In the area of national defense, he is, and always has been, very good.  Regarding the judiciary, he seems to have become pretty solid.  Even if he was squishy on these two crucial topics, however, he would be preferable to BHO, a pompous nutjob who is emphatically disloyal.
