Rich Horton tried to link to this (or a similar story) in Comments. It seems those white beaches in Malibu, California are not white from the sand. It’s the snow.
LOS ANGELES — Snow snarled major mountain highways and even dusted Malibu on Wednesday as a cold storm hit parts of California. One person was killed by a wind-related helicopter crash, and an overflowing river on the U.S.-Mexico border led to the evacuation of nearly two dozen people, rescues of about 50 horses and the deaths of four others.
Styming thousands of commuters and travelers, snow shut Interstate 15 over 4,190-foot Cajon Pass east of Los Angeles and roads through the San Gabriel Mountains connecting metropolitan Los Angeles to the commuter suburbs of Palmdale and Lancaster in the high desert to the north.
Accuweather reports that Malibu is currently at a summery 55 degrees, so the snow is gone. For now. I heard a report earlier today that the California citrus crop is in a bit of danger tonight, however, as temperatures in many areas are expected to drop below freezing. Where I live, the ice is now pinging off the windows as we begin to get a “wintry mix”. That’s weatherman-speak for “bloody mess”. Ice, sleet, rain, freezing rain, snow and whatever other leftover meteorological stuff the skies can throw at us. The walkway to the house is already deadly.
If you live out east, don’t worry, you won’t be left out. What’s hitting us now will be over your heads in the next day or two. And there are more storms lined up that promise to make all of the next week miserable across much of the US.
Jingle bells, everyone.
