Well, Her Imperial Highness Nancy Pelosi has unilaterally decreed that she has found one place where Congress will hold the line – and continue spending. On themselves, that is. She has cut off an attempt to stop automatic pay raises for member of Congress.
Congress’ automatic pay raises are in little immediate danger of being scrapped for good, even with the economy slumping and millions of Americans unemployed. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday would not commit to holding a vote on a bill to do away with the annual cost-of-living increases. She pointed out that Congress recognized the economic crisis by voting this week to skip next year’s raise.
None of that messy having to actually go on record and vote to raise pay, not for our Nancy.
Congress got a nice little $4,700 raise in January bringing their salary up to a tidy $174,000. Those “little” automatic raises will continue under Pelosi’s watch. Nice to know where our tax dollars are going – automatically.
