In a very abrupt turnaround, reported in a very brief story, the Obama administration has backed off from its sleazy attempt to wound our nation’s wounded warriors again.
The White House on Wednesday backed off a controversial plan that would have dramatically altered the way the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) handles insurance claims, after veterans groups staged an all-out fight against such a proposal.
President Obama will not pursue a proposal that would have allowed the VA to charge private insurance companies for the treatment of veterans with service- or war-related injuries. The proposal raised the ire of prominent Democrats on the House and Senate Veterans’ Affairs panels. On Wednesday morning 68 Democratic and GOP House members sent Obama a letter, initiated by freshman Rep. Glenn Nye (D-Va.), urging the administration to drop the proposal.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was the first to announce Wednesday afternoon that the president won’t pursue such a proposal.
Frankly, I was shocked that Obama seemed intent on this crappy little initiative to raise revenue off those who served their nation and were wounded. I’m glad they caved on this. But, the fact that they even proposed such an abhorrent policy speaks volumes about their character.
Not in a good way.
Shaming them about their policies seems to work. It gets their attention and makes them back off from their egregious proposals. Keep hammering, keep calling your Senators and Representatives.
The press has intoned that America voted for “change”. Is this the change you wanted, America? An administration that dishonors and discounts the service of those who have sworn to protect this nation by trying to raise revenue off their wounds? Is this really what you wanted when you cast your vote?
