Is This Britain’s New “Stimulus” Plan?

Forget Cash for Clunkers. The son of Muammer Ghaddafi (spelling this guy’s name is always an adventure) has announced that Britain may well have been engaging in a ”Gas for Bombers” plan.

Gordon Brown was under fresh pressure last night after shocking claims by Libya that the release of the Lockerbie bomber was linked explicity to trade deals benefiting Britain.

Colonel Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam said the case of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi was discussed at every meeting between the then Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Libyan leader.

But the Foreign Office strongly denied any link between the boosting of UK business interests and the freeing of the man convicted of Britain’s worst terrorist atrocity.
A spokesman insisted: ‘No deal has been made between the UK Government and Libya in relation to Megrahi and any commercial interests.’

Foreign Secretary David Miliband also rejected suggestions that the Government wanted 57-year-old Megrahi released so commercial relations with oil-rich Libya could be improved.

‘I really reject that entirely,’ he said. ‘That is a slur both on myself and the Government.’

You might want to discuss that with Libya, who has apparently kicked you to the curb on this one. Brown is going to be toast in the next election anyway, from everything I have read. But the election may well come a bit sooner if this turns out to be true.

It will also diminish Tony Blair if he was involved in any way. Seriously diminish.

I can’t see an advantage to Libya to lie about this – but admittedly, I don’t focus much attention on that country.

Most of the bomber’s victims were American, including a large number from Syracuse University. Being from Upstate New York myself and remembering this incident all too well, I would not have allowed the bomber to walk on a life sentence. Brown allowed it. Now he should answer the questions that his actions bring up.
