Crushed ACORN

In one of the fastest abandon ship drills ever, politically-speaking, Senate democrats overwhelmingly voted to strip ACORN of all Some federal funding.

At the beginning of the vote, it appeared that Democrats might resist. Initially, a half-dozen Democrats cast votes in opposition to the amendment. A few more cast votes against it as the rest of the Senate voted, but the tide appeared to shift. More and more Democrats signed onto the amendment, and votes started changing. One male voice could be heard in the chamber saying, “I want to change my vote!” Among those who changed their votes: Tom Udall (D-NM), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), and Herb Kohl (D-WI).

An update over at Hot Air posts the names of the seven Senators who are (as NRO’s Jim Geraghty put it) Child-Whoring Pimp Assistance Program defenders:

Dick Durbin (D-IL)
Roland Burris (D-IL)
Robert Casey (D-PA)
Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)
Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
Bernie Sanders (I-VT)
Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)

Illinois and Vermont are unanimously for Child-Whoring Pimp Assistance Programs, apparently. Or at least their Senators are. The voters might beg to differ. (Off the top of my head, as a former Upstate New Yorker, I’d say that Kirsten Gillibrand just unelected herself. This will not sit well in a lot of New York. Outside of Child-Whoring Pimp Assistance Program supporters, that is. She’s got the ACORN vote.)

At this point, ACORN is politically radioactive. If Big Government has another video, ACORN will be lucky not to be criminalized, prosecuted and put out of business.

As Ed Morrisey points out, this is not over yet, but even Nancy Pelosi must see that walking the plank by supporting ACORN is toxic for a lot of House Democrats. Look for a House vote soon – that will not go well for ACORN.

UPDATE: Corrected the post, not all funding was voted on, just a limited amount in the HUD funding. But Big Government just came out with a 4th video – and it a a doozy. Actually worse than the first three.

You can accuse me of drinking Mwalimu Daudi’s kool-aid, but I can’t help but think that even if the House goes along and cuts funding, at some point funding will be restored in the fine print of an omnibus spending bill. We’ll see.

“Senate democrats overwhelmingly voted to strip ACORN of all federal funding.”

Uhm, no. Only funding from the Transportation and Housing appropriations bill. Their funding under other bills is still intact.

  3. Mwalimu Daudi says:

Have another sip – cuz something like that is what will happen. Heckfire – here is the whole jug! I got the surplus left over from the McCain campaign last year.

Today’s vote was easy, since ACORN’s attempts to branch out into the child prostitution business is too fresh on everyone’s minds (except the state-run media’s). Plus the pedophile vote is not big and loud and rich enough for the Democrats to consider going after (unlike, say, the illegal alien vote or the 9/11 Truther vote).

But Democrats will figure that after a few days or weeks the heat will be off, and then the money can flow again. And the spineless GOP will do nothing. Recall that for years ACORN did its voting fraud stuff in plain view of everyone – and Republicans said nada when they were in power.

Hook, book. Cuff, stuff. Bag, tag. Nuff said.

  5. Larry Sheldon says:

Don’t have to wait–the action only strips the freeload of that particular bill–other loads already in effect are unchanged.

That’s what I get for posting to fast after far too little sleep. But Mwalimu, I think I’ll keep hoping and believing that Americans are smarter than the left assumes. And a lot less easily led.
