Dede Scozzafava has suspended her campaign in NY-23, clearing the field for Conservative Doug Hoffman to battle the Democratic candidate in a two-way race:

Dede Scozzafava, the Republican and Independence parties candidate, announced Saturday that she is suspending her campaign for the 23rd Congressional District and releasing all her supporters.

The state Assemblywoman has not thrown her support to either Doug Hoffman, the Conservative Party candidate, or Bill Owens, the Democratic candidate.

I think it would have been a bit more classy if she had endorsed Hoffman, but at least she did not endorse Owens, either (she did say that she remains a Republican, too). That the article makes that point shows just how shaky Scozzafava’s  perceived loyalties are even to the local media.

One sincerely hopes the Republicans (local and national) are going to prove they learned something from this and will step in with some last minute aid for Hoffman. Local party officials can mobilize their troops for Hoffman while the national party can get him some last minute cash.

That’s a hint, party folks. Take it.

I was very surprised to see her drop out. She must not have a gargantuan ego, as such people rarely take one for the team like this. I sincerely hope the Repub leadership has learned a lesson. We’ll see. It will be interesting to see how her supporters break. I thought Kos had endorsed her at one time. I am thinking most of her supporters will go to Hoffman but if she was as far to the left as we have been led to believe, maybe a fair chunk will head to Owens?

I think Owens had already siphoned the majority of her supporters away. Kos had endorsed her but suddenly withdrew the endorsement yesterday, I think. Word is that Hoffman supporters are trying to get her to officially endorse Hoffman. We’ll see. I think Hoffman gets the bulk of whatever voters she had left, but it will be even more if she asks them to go for Hoffman.

Not a chance. This is the GOP establishment you’re talkin’ at. They don’t take no hints, they already know everything there is to know about losing elections.

And, if by some quirk they do screw up and win big enough to gain control of Congress or the White House, you can be sure they’ll squander the opportunity with corruption and incompetence on a scale to make a Democrat blush.

Actually, they took the hint. (No, I’m not claiming responsibility. But they are stepping in for Hoffman.)

I stand corrected in my assessment of Dede. I see she is urging her supporters to vote dem. Apparently she does have the giant ego of a sore loser. This also underlines the fact that she was no Repub. The repubs who masterminded this fiasco now have even more egg to wipe off their faces.
