Quid Pro Quisling

A report in The Politico makes it rather obvious that Dede Scozzafava is not done with her betrayals. Democratic heavyweights all the way up to the White House rather obviously offered her something for her endorsement of the Democrat in NY-23. Politico points out that she appears likely to switch parties and deliver her state assembly seat to the Democrats. (Which they don’t have any real need for, incidentally. Democrats have dominated the lower house in New York for as long as I can remember.)

When some senior Democrats worried Scozzafava might be wavering about the endorsement, according to another account, the White House got Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, one of the most powerful figures in the state, and New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to place calls to the assemblywoman on Saturday evening to coax her into delivering it. Sen. Chuck Schumer, who had been in touch with White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and Israel, also weighed in.

Two senior Democrats with ties to the White House praised Cuomo’s role in the operation, saying they were confident Scozzafava was on board after learning that she told Cuomo: “You’re going to be the next governor of New York.”

Also critical was Silver’s assurance, in a phone conversation with Scozzafava, that the state Assembly Democratic caucus would embrace her if she chose to switch parties, now viewed as a real possibility after her endorsement Sunday of Owens.

Well, Dede, you might want to reflect on all the enticements that were obviously also offered to Benedict Arlen. Instead of protection from a primary challenge, he’s all on his own.

I’ll be watching to see what Dede gets in return for her integrity.

What’s the exchange rate for thirty pieces of silver these days?

Scozzafava’s 15 minutes are about over. She’s on her way to the shadow world of disgraced politicians.

At best, she’s a footnote in the story of the Great Conservative Revival of 2009. Political turn-coats don’t remain long in the limelight, they don’t hang around soaking up gratitude for their acts of treachery. Turn-coats are an embarrassment to themselves, to those they betray, and to those they sully with tainted allegiance.

Turn-coats can never be fully trusted and everyone knows it and acts accordingly. Scozzafava will soon be anathema on both sides of the political divide, alone and shunned by former friends and neighbors. Honest and decent citizen do not want to be seen, let alone associated with damaged goods.

Like the acid reflux and lingering indigestion left over after a sleepless night purging bad fish, Scozzafava has reduced herself to an ugly and unpleasant episode best recalled as a foolish mistake not to be repeated.

Nothing’s really changed. She’s just switched to an accurate name tag.

Where else besides NY23 are the Republicans not vetting their candidates and throwing away money?
