And When The Omagic Goes Away

Or how the latest Super-Gigantic, Historical, Bestest-Evah, Self-Referential Speech is playing in Europe. That would be very, very badly, indeed.

Just in Time for the Campaign

For each troop movement, Obama had a number to match. US strength in Afghanistan will be tripled relative to the Bush years, a fact that is sure to impress hawks in America. But just 18 months later, just in time for Obama’s re-election campaign, the horror of war is to end and the draw down will begin. The doves of peace will be let free.

The speech continued in that vein. It was as though Obama had taken one of his old campaign speeches and merged it with a text from the library of ex-President George W. Bush. Extremists kill in the name of Islam, he said, before adding that it is one of the “world’s great religions.” He promised that responsibility for the country’s security would soon be transferred to the government of President Hamid Karzai — a government which he said was “corrupt.” The Taliban is dangerous and growing stronger. But “America will have to show our strength in the way that we end wars,” he added.

It was a dizzying combination of surge and withdrawal, of marching to and fro. The fast pace was reminiscent of plays about the French revolution: Troops enter from the right to loud cannon fire and then they exit to the left. And at the end, the dead are left on stage.

Obama’s Magic No Longer Works

But in this case, the public was more disturbed than entertained. Indeed, one could see the phenomenon in a number of places in recent weeks: Obama’s magic no longer works. The allure of his words has grown weaker.

Long time readers know where I stand when it comes to America’s armed forces.

And I am afraid for them.

I am afraid for my country.

During the 2008 election I strongly insisted to people I knew who were voting for him that I would NOT turn our military over to Obama. It was my #1 priority. #2 was the SCOTUS that he would be filling seats for.

What is on display here between Obama’s pregnant pauses for missing applause last night from the cadets and officers, the Chris Matthews “enemy camp” remarks (no, that was not an apology today, but a rationalization for his use of the term) is the total disconnect and lack of intellect the left/liberals have in this country for the military. I have seen the pictures of the cadets reading ‘heavy’ books on killing while waiting in their seats before Obama arrived. They all look so pretty and crisp sitting there in their gray uniforms, like fresh-faced kids trying to stay awake past their bedtime after a full day that probably began at 4am. And they stared at him as he talked and talked … emotionless … him and them.

I recall a remark by Matthews from a few weeks ago about Obama just being too intelligent for us.

Fact is, the most clueless person in that grand auditorium at West Point last night was the CiC, and sadly those cadets and officers had it confirmed. The look on everyone of those faces was, “Umm, nooo, 2+2 does NOT equal 3 and sometimes maybe 5. It always = 4 … Damn, we’re F*%#ED!”

An exchange on Glenn Beck’s radio show today between Glenn and his producers caught the moment best:

    [...]

GLENN: Wait, wait, wait, wait. Hang on just a second. See, I heard this as a writer. I heard this as a writer. Go ahead. Play it again. I’m going to show you one thing that the writer was thinking and I’ll bet the TelePrompTer was thinking and I’ll bet he was thinking. Here it is.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: As commander in chief, I have determined that it is in our vital national interest to send an additional 30,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan.

    GLENN: Wait for applause.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: After 18 months our troops will begin to come home.

GLENN: That’s why I mean, he was waiting.

    PAT: None.

GLENN: He was waiting and they’re like, uh huh, uh huh.

    PAT: Yeah, great.

GLENN: You better check yourself before you wreck yourself. [...]

Like I said, The mental midget was making balloon animals before them and they know amid all that creeking somethings gonna make a big bad “POP!” … and it ain’t gonna be pretty.

  2. I think Chris Mathews remark about “enemy camp” is a dead on revelation about how the Obama administration sees the military.

  3. ropelight says:

It’s also how I see the establishment media, and President Barack Obama’s Administration for that matter. Or, is that a distinction without a difference?

  4. syn says:

We must take matters into our own hands.

Go to Any Solider, click on where to send, get an address and send support to our troops. If you purchase at Extreme Outfitters you’ll receive 10%.

Just because this administration is going to screw our troops does not mean we have to go along with the rape.

  5. feeblemind says:

QM, I would expand your thought and include the Left in general as viewing the armed forces as ‘the enemy’. Indeed, that is why I suspect Mathews made the remark. I would speculate that he views West Point as an ‘enemy camp’ as well.
