One implosion:

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that James O’Keefe, half of the ACORN-busting duo that conducted undercover stings across the country last summer, was arrested today in an alleged wiretapping plot at the New Orleans office of Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu. O’Keefe and three other young men were arrested by the FBI. One of the men is the son of the acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana.

Two Implosions:

Obama Liquidates Himself

A spending freeze? That’s the brilliant response of the Obama team to their first serious political setback?

It’s appalling on every level.

It’s bad economics, depressing demand when the economy is still suffering from mass unemployment. Jonathan Zasloff writes that Obama seems to have decided to fire Tim Geithner and replace him with “the rotting corpse of Andrew Mellon” (Mellon was Herbert Hoover’s Treasury Secretary, who according to Hoover told him to “liquidate the workers, liquidate the farmers, purge the rottenness”.)

It’s bad long-run fiscal policy, shifting attention away from the essential need to reform health care and focusing on small change instead.

And it’s a betrayal of everything Obama’s supporters thought they were working for. Just like that, Obama has embraced and validated the Republican world-view — and more specifically, he has embraced the policy ideas of the man he defeated in 2008. A correspondent writes, “I feel like an idiot for supporting this guy.”

Neither is pretty. O’Keefe is looking at serious jail time in a Federal pen. Obama is looking at a total collapse of the Democrats in the fall. Congressional Democrats now have the wonderful choice of alienating the middle completely by rejecting the freeze or having the base reject them in the fall.

In other words, the Democrats now have him to ensure it won’t be like 1994. Yep, he’s made sure of that, all right.

It’s going to be more like 1876 at this rate.

That would be the year of Little Bighorn. Boots and Saddles, Democrats. Garryowen!

I admit it looks grim for O’Keefe but I don’t like convictions in the court of public opinion. Unless the rules have been changed he is still innocent until proven guilty.

Take a deep breath and count to 10. There is no official charge of attempted wiretapping, and no bugs found on the accused. News reports have jumped to conclusions with unsupported allegations and discriminatory speculation.

Yes, the boys were there, but what they were up to hasn’t yet been revealed. The facts are not before us, and it’s too soon to be forming conclusions.

Patterico says ‘hold the phone’ (pun) on O’Keefe:

Yeah, I should have checked further. The press is alleging things that are not in the affidavit.
